Radioactivity is one of the most significant scientific discoveries in human history. Radioactivity is the spontaneous emission of energy and particles from the unstable nuclei of certain atoms. These unstable atoms naturally transform into more stable forms by releasing radiation in the form of alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays. This process occurs without any external influence and continues until a stable nucleus is formed. The phenomenon was first discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel while studying uranium salts. Becquerel observed that uranium emitted invisible rays capable of exposing photographic plates, even in complete darkness. His discovery sparked worldwide scientific interest and laid the foundation for further research into radioactive materials.

Among the scientists inspired by Becquerel's discovery was Marie Curie, widely known as Madame Curie. Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1867, Marie Curie displayed exceptional academic ability from a young age. Due to limited educational opportunities for women in Poland, she moved to Paris to pursue higher education at the Sorbonne University. There she earned degrees in physics and mathematics and later married Pierre Curie, who became both her husband and research partner.

Marie Curie devoted her research to understanding the mysterious rays discovered by Becquerel. She carefully examined different minerals containing uranium and observed that some emitted much stronger radiation than pure uranium itself. This led her to conclude that these minerals contained previously unknown radioactive elements. Through years of painstaking laboratory work, often under extremely difficult conditions, Marie and Pierre Curie succeeded in isolating two new elements in 1898: Polonium, named after Marie's homeland, Poland, and Radium, an element that exhibited remarkably intense radioactivity.
